Role and mandate
The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) is the apex representative body for large, medium, and small-scale grain milling companies in Zimbabwe. Its members collectively produce approximately 98% of the country's flour, giving the association a central coordinating role across the sector.
Leadership
GMAZ is chaired by Tafadzwa Musarara, who represents the association in dealings with government, regulators, and the wider public on milling industry matters.
Wheat procurement coordination
One of GMAZ's key functions is coordinating wheat procurement and distribution across its member millers, helping to manage the interplay between local wheat supply and the imports still needed to meet quality requirements for bread flour.
Foreign currency advocacy
GMAZ has consistently advocated for wheat to receive priority foreign currency allocation, on a par with essential imports such as fuel, arguing that consistent access to foreign currency is critical to keeping mills supplied and running.
Recent policy engagement
In 2026, GMAZ was at the centre of the debate over new grain import levies introduced under SI 87 of 2025, warning that the levies would raise flour and bread prices and challenging the framework in the High Court.
